Join Global Classroom for an engaging evening of Russian history, culture, and politics. Concern over Russia’s agenda in the Middle East, Eurasia, and elsewhere continues to garner increasing attention in the U.S. media. How much of this is sensationalist, and to what aspects of Putin’s politics should we really be giving our attention? Learn more about Russia’s role in current affairs and its influence in the affairs of other nations—including our own. Help your students to grapple with the complex relationships of today’s world leaders, and to understand Russia’s unique positionality in politics past and present.
First, we will hear from Scott Radnitz, Director of the University of Washington’s Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies. Professor Radnitz will provide background knowledge on Russia regime dynamics and help us understand the inner workings of Russia’s government and informal politics.
Next, we will hear from Jacqueline Miller, President and CEO of the World Affairs Council and a former Senior Associate at the EastWest Institute, where she focused on national security policies related to U.S.-Russia relations. Her talk will center on issues of security, including a discussion of popular perceptions of Russia as a ‘threat’ to national security.
Finally, we are pleased to host Jill Dougherty, former CNN Moscow Bureau Chief and White House and Foreign Affairs Correspondent. Jill will share her on-the-ground experience as a journalist in Russia, recounting both the social and political changes that she has witnessed in Russia over time.
Curriculum Connections:
Hear from Ryan Hauck, GC Director, who recently returned from Russia and has new ideas and perspectives for bringing Russia into your curriculum and classroom. Teachers will receive a comprehensive resource packet that includes a variety of original lesson plans and activities with interdisciplinary activities to help facilitate student learning. Examples include a literature and film list, news articles, infographics, and video clips highlighting Russia’s government, economy, culture, and history, and STEM-related activities focused on technology and scientific advancements in Russia. Share ideas with students—and with your colleagues—and get the most out of this workshop by bringing back what you’ve learned to your classroom.
