Join Global Classroom and representatives of OneWorld Now and the Nicholas Sparks Foundation to learn how they are using a film project, “Around the World in Seattle,” to facilitate discussion about diversity in our community. The film follows seven high school students of different cultural backgrounds as they show each other around places in Seattle that are meaningful to them.
In this workshop, we will explore how this film can be used as a jumping-off point from which to foster peer-to-peer learning and dialogue around identity, community, and social justice issues. Educators will have the opportunity to discuss as a group how they can build on this film to incorporate digital storytelling into their own classrooms. We will also hear some specific suggestions for follow-up lessons, including ideas for tying the film into math and history curricula. Most importantly, we will talk through the ideas of teachers in attendance about how to help students learn to recognize, appreciate, and learn from the diversity they encounter daily in their own communities.
