1. Judicial High School Teacher Institute, June 22-24, 2016 at the U.S. Court in Seattle- Federal judges that you read about in the paper will make presentations on the Constitution, federal judiciary and federal issues including civil rights and federal sentencing.
Teachers will have a chance to view and discuss actual federal court hearings - sentencing, new arrests, and search warrants, and voir dire proceedings. Justice Mary Fairhurst will help clarify the difference between state and federal law.
In addition, teachers will work with interactive lesson plans as well as develop their own lesson plan to enable immediate implementation in the classroom. A master teacher will assist with ideas how to implement in the classroom. Clock hours, pending.
The federal court will pay for double occupancy hotel rooms, parking, and breakfast/lunch meals.
2. iCivics Institute for Grades 5-9 Teachers from July 25-27, 2016 at the U.S. Court in Seattle –
Have you wanted to know more about using the free resource, iCivics, the video game-centered Civics program launched by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor? Now is your chance! Teachers will experience the iCivics lessons and games while also learning more about the Constitution, juries, branches of government, civil rights, and other topics addressed in iCivics.
A junior high teacher experienced with using iCivics in the classroom will help teachers negotiate the iCivics website and practical implementation. The federal court will pay for double occupancy hotel rooms, parking, and breakfast/lunch meals.

3. Judicial Institute for High School and Middle School Teachers from November 3-4, 2016 in Spokane, WA
The Court will hold its 8th annual Judicial Institute for High School and Middle School Teachers November 3-4, 2016. The Institute is for high school and middle school teachers in counties* in the Eastern District of Washington who have not previously attended. The general theme of the course is the Constitution – how it works, how it has been interpreted, and how the Judiciary evolved to where it is today.
The interactive program will include –
●Attendance at actual hearings
●Discussion about judicial review, judicial philosophies, the Constitution and amendments to the Constitution
●Sentencing Scenarios – the teachers are asked to determine the appropriate sentence for fictitious defendants;
and information about:
●11 Million Undocumented Aliens: How did we get where we are and where do
we go from here?
●Civil Rights – Selma, 1965 and The Right to Vote
●Federal Court Civil Motion: So Your Constitutional Rights Were Violated – Now What?
●Role of the Judiciary in “Interpreting” the Law; Significant Contributions the Judiciary has made to our Form of Government
●Panel Discussion and Q & A Session
Participants will hear from and interact with attorneys and judges from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States District Court.
Course participants will receive materials that can be used in classes and with colleagues.
